Seventeen students from Juneau traveled to Anchorage last weekend to participate in the 2013 All State Music Festival at Bartlett High School in Anchorage, joining more than 400 high school musicians from around the state.
The festival gives high school musicians a chance to perform as members of statewide band, choral and orchestral music ensembles, while promoting high standards of musicianship.
JDHS qualifying students under the direction of Richard Moore and John Unzicker were David Dumesnil, Samuel Adam, Seth Bodine, Megan Sheufelt, Ruby Steedle, James Cheng, Elias Antaya, Robert Newman, Solomon Unzicker, McLain Sidmore, Megan McCallister, Ashlee Carella and Melinda Cummins.
TMHS band students, under the direction of Brian Van Kirk and Tyree Pini, included Jared Lear, Calley Odum, Jordan Cooper and Merci Marcelino.
First chair awards were given to Megan Sheufelt (bass clarinet) Jared Lear (euphonium) and Samuel Adam (tuba).
The All State Music Festival is organized through the Alaska School Activities Association, a nonprofit involved in a range of interscholastic activities for secondary schools, including athletics, music, dramatics speech and debates. The event has been funded by First National Bank Alaska since 1990, when state funding was withdrawn.
