Juneau Lyric Opera will celebrate 25 years of the Mid-Winter Vocal Festival this year, beginning with workshops on Dec. 27 and culminating with a performance Jan. 4.
For 25 years, Dr. Byron McGilvray has been traveling to Juneau to lead these workshops and performances. This year, there are three workshop classes available.
• Group Voice, an intro course for shower singers or those who haven’t sung in a while, will be offered on Friday, Dec. 27, Monday, Dec. 30 and Thursday, Jan. 2. The fee is $37.
• Solo Performance, where participants will learn how to sell their songs to the audience, will be offered on Friday, Dec. 27, Saturday, Dec 28 and Wednesday Jan 1. Participants in this workshop should plan to come prepared with two pieces of memorized music, and a copy of the music for vocal coach and accompanist Jan Capelle. The class is limited to 10 singers and pre-registration is necessary by Dec. 24. The fee is $57.
• Festival Workshop, where participants will sing choral music with their friends and neighbors, will be offered Dec. 28-Jan. 3. All skill levels are welcome. Participants will be singing Mozart’s “Laudate Dominum” and the Kyrie from Schubert’s Mass in G, as well as selections from Orff’s “Carmina Burana” and Bernstein’s “Chichester Psalms.” The workshop fee is $67.
All classes will be held at Holy Trinity Church downtown.
The workshop ends in a performance on Jan. 4 at the Thunder Mountain High School auditorium.
