Gold Town joins forces with local theater groups to present "On-Screen Theater" series

The Gold Town Nickelodeon has teamed up with Perseverance Theatre and Theater In The Rough for its latest offering: recorded live broadcasts of theatrical productions from the Royal Shakespeare Company in Stratford-upon-Avon.

The first “On-Screen Theater” production will be “Richard II,” presented three times this weekend. The performance is directed by Gregory Doran, and stars David Tennant (Dr. Who) as Richard, with Oliver Ford Davies as the Duke of York, Michael Pennington as John of Gaunt and Nigel Lindsay as Bolingbroke.

The local project is based on a collaboration between the Royal Shakespeare Company and Picturehouse Cinemas, who presented the first live broadcast of “Richard” II to screen audiences on Nov. 13. Since then, this recorded performance has been shown in cinemas around the world. “Richard II” played in Stratford through Nov. 16 and is now playing at the Barbican Theatre in London through Jan. 25.

Shakespeare’s “Richard II” tells the story of an intelligent but irresponsible and weak leader who banishes his cousin, Henry Bolingbroke, fearing his popularity with the people threatens the stability of his position on the throne. Bolingbroke rebels, gathering support form the nobles, and eventually Richard yields. After being imprisoned in the Tower of London and, later, Pontefract Castle, he is killed by Henry’s men, who believe they are acting under the king’s orders.

Henry’s story as king is continued in Shakespeare’s “Henry IV,” Part 1 & Part 2 and “Henry V.” The Gold Town expects to show both parts of “Henry IV,” this summer, along with “Two Gentlemen of Verona.”

Tickets to the local on-screen broadcast of “Richard II” are $10 ($8 for students and seniors) and are available online at or at Gold Town’s box office. Showtimes are Saturday, Dec. 14, at 3 p.m., Tuesday, Dec. 17 at 6:30 p.m., and Wednesday, Dec. 18, at 6:30 p.m.

Next up in the “On-Screen Theater” series will be Stephen Sondheim’s musical “Merrily We Roll Along,” recorded live from London’s West End Harold Pinter Theater. It is scheduled to be shown Jan. 18, 20, and 21. Tickets are on sale online,, or at the Gold Town.
