Fairbanks Arts Association seeks entries for 20th annual Statewide Poetry Contest

Fairbanks Arts Association’s Literary Arts Committee is now accepting entries for their 20th Annual Statewide Poetry Contest. The purpose of the contest is to encourage, publicize and reward the writing of high quality poetry. The deadline for entries is Jan. 31 by 6 p.m.


The juror for this year’s contest is Susanna J. Mishler, author of “Termination Dust,” to be published by Boreal Books in 2014. A lifelong Alaskan, she lives in Anchorage and earns her living as an electrician. Her poems have appeared in Alaska Quarterly Review, The Iowa Review, the Mid-American Review and elsewhere.

Awards will be given out at three age levels: Adult, high school and elementary/middle school. Prizes for adults are $150 for first place, $100 for second place and $50 for third place; for high schoolers, prizes are $100/$50/$25; and for elementary/middle schoolers $50/$30/$15.

The entry fee for adults is $4 per poem, or $13 for four poems, and for students of any grade its $3 per poem or $10 for four poems. The contest is open to Alaska residents only. No more than four poems per poet will be accepted, and the work must be original and unpublished.

Submissions may be hand-delivered to the Fairbanks Arts Association; mailed to Fairbanks Arts Association, Alaska Centennial Center for the Arts, Pioneer Park, 2300 Airport Way; or e-mailed to digitalfaa@gmail.com. Fees will be accepted via the phone, mail or in person. Submissions will not be entered without payment of fees.

Winners of the contest will be announced on March 8 at 7 p.m. at Fairbanks Arts Association’s Bear Gallery.
