Fireside Lecture to focus on the secret lives of crabs and spot prawns

This week’s free Fireside Lecture at the Mendenhall Glacier Visitor Center will focus on the secret lives of crabs and spot prawns.


University of Alaska Southeast Professor of Biology Sherry Tamone will delve into how crabs and prawns grow and reproduce, and will explain the some of the studies occurring at the Juneau UAS laboratory that help scientists understand the crustaceans.

Tamone teaches Comparative Physiology and Invertebrate Zoology and other courses at UAS where she has taught for 15 years. She has a joint appointment with the University of Alaska Fairbanks School of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences. Recently, she received a Fulbright Research Award to go to Israel to learn new ways to study crustacean growth.

Her presentation will be held at 6:30 p.m. and repeated at 8 p.m. Friday, March 7.
