Writers group to host poetry reading Sunday

The Burn Thompson Writers Group will be reading from their winter work from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday, April 13, at the Douglas library meeting room.

The writers group, previously known as the Focus Writing Group, was named in honor of Thompson following her death in 2013. Thompson had been a dedicated member of the group, established by former Juneau Empire reporter Kristen Hutchison in 2003, for many years and acted as its informal leader. Other longterm members include local writers Richard Stokes and Mary Lou Spartz, who will both be sharing poems at the reading. A small sampling of their work is presented below.

Driving at spring breakup

By Mary Lou Spartz

They don’t look both ways
as they hold gloved hands
crossing the street,
she gazes up tenderly,
he fills his eyes
with her face.

I come to a slow stop
not wanting to startle the glow
that surrounds them.
In mid-crosswalk they turn,
cling to each other in bulky jackets,
and lay claim to a kiss.

Riding in Care-A-Van

By Mary Lou Spartz

Keith pulls the van over
at the stop sign,
jumps out to help me
as cars behind us have to wait.
He buckles me in,
checks his rearview
and away we go.

A passenger behind me
leans forward and says,
“It must be wonderful to know at your age
you can still stop traffic.”

Recipe for a Poem

By Richard Stokes

Put your main idea in a pot,
add strong verbs and rhythm
and simmer until coherent.
Add or remove adjectives to taste.

The Burn Thompson Writing group usually meets at 6:30 p.m. on Mondays at the Downtown Library, but on April 14 will be shifting their time so that writers can attend the Kim Heacox reading at the library at 6:30 p.m.

During the rest of April, the group will continue to meet on Mondays at the library, and new writers are welcome. The schedule for the rest of the spring and summer has yet to be determined.
