National Geographic explorer Davis to speak in Juneau May 14

Author, anthropologist and National Geographic explorer Wade Davis will be in Juneau next week to give a presentation based on his book, “The Sacred Headwaters: The Fight to Save the Stikine, Skeena and Nass.” The presentation will focus on how First Nations and others including Davis worked to protect the birthplace of the Skeena, Nass and Stikine Rivers from industrial development that threatened to destroy the rivers’ healthy salmon runs.

Davis will be joined by Annita McPhee, President of Tahltan Central Council, Tahltan elder Mary Dennis, and Richard Peterson, President of Central Council of the Tlingit and Haida Indian Tribes of Alaska. A panel discussion and audience Q&A will follow Davis’ presentation.

In his talk and during the Q&A period, Davis, McPhee, Dennis and Peterson will discuss how lessons learned from the Sacred Headwaters campaign might be applied to threats facing Southeast Alaska salmon from large-scale mining activity proposed for northern British Columbia.

The presentation will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 14, at the Juneau Arts & Culture Center.

Taku River salmon appetizers will be served.
