Festival of the 3 Skulls to feature 3 bands

“Festival of the Three Skulls,” a musical celebration honoring the memory and spirit of the dead, will be held Nov. 1 at the Rockwell Ballroom downtown. The event, a benefit show for KXLL, will feature live music from local bands The Cloud People and Playboy Spaceman, and visiting from Sitka, Silver Jackson. Revelers are invited to bring copies of photos or other disposable items remembering loved ones for display. They can also send photos via email to playboyspaceman@gmail.com.

Organizers described the event as “a celebration of the natural cycles of life and death as part of the great mystery of the human experience.”

Local band The Cloud People is led by Bridget Cross Kuhar (vocals, electric piano), and features her husband George Kuhar (guitar, percussion) and her nephew, Nick Gallas (clarinet). Saturday’s event will also celebrate the release of The Cloud People’s first album, “Time to Land,” put out by Shadow Island Records, the Kuhars’ own label. See Q&A with Kuhar in this week’s Arts.

Bridget Kuhar and George Kuhar also form the main members of Playboy Spaceman, a band that recently released its second album, “One Heart Army.” The CD also featured local musicians Nick Wagner, Jason Messing and Simon Taylor.

Silver Jackson is the musical alter ego of well-known Sitka artist Nicholas Galanin. His most recent release is the single “You and I Should Try Again,” which features the OC Notes (Black Constellation), Benjamin Verdoes (Iska Dhaaf) and vocals by Samantha Crain, a highly acclaimed singer of Choctaw heritage from Oklahoma. The single comes from Silver Jackson’s upcoming full-length album, “From Another World Like Starlight.” Find out more here: http://silverjackson.bandcamp.com/

Admission to Saturday’s event is $15 and doors open at 8:30 p.m. Tickets are available at the door or through kxll.org. For more information, visit https://www.facebook.com/events/1458695511022119/
