In the Next Room, or The Vibrator Play, March 11-April 3, Perseverance Theatre. The play takes place at the dawn of the age of electricity. The perfect gentleman and inventor, Dr. Givings has created a device to treat “hysteria” in his patients by inducing “paroxysms.” This attracts the attention of his wife. A modern comedy of manners. Storytime, every Wednesday at 11 am at the downtown public library, Thursday at the Douglas library and Friday at the Valley library.

 

International Folk Dance, every Sunday at 6 p.m., The Alaska Club (downtown) Recreational dance—first hour is instruction. No partner necessary. Beginners welcome.

Pancake Breakfast Fundraiser, Seward’s Day, March 28, 9 a.m.-11:30- a.m., Juneau Senior Center. All proceeds go to the Juneau Nutrition Program which funds the senior lunches provided through the Center and the Meals on Wheels program. Pancakes, eggs, bacon, juice, Heritage coffee and more will served as live music plays. It’s $15 per adult at the door and $13 in advance; children 7-12 years old are $7 and 6 years old and under are eat free. Call Carol Comolli at 463-6175 for advance purchase of tickets or more information.

 

Raincountry Flyfishers meeting, March 23, 7 p.m., Thunder Mountain High School library. Those in attendance will show each other how to tie some of their favorite flies for fishing. Informal discussions will center on fishing trips, both past and planned.

 

Juneau Raptor Center business meeting, March 26, 11 a.m. meeting, noon-2 p.m. open house, Nugget Mall Community Room. All welcome. Education birds will be in attendence.

 

Marie Drake Planetarium show: Earth Day, March 29, 6:30 p.m., Marie Drake Planetarium. Earth Day was first celebrated in 1970, and is now celebrated in more than 192 countries each year. Learn the history of Earth Day and how humor is used to encourage environmentally friendly behavior every day of the year. Presentation by Cristina Della Rosa who has an Astronomy, Astronaut and Alien humor website (astronomyhumor.webs.com) launced in 2011). She has also compiled two e-books on same subjects. Free and suitable for all ages. Presentation proceeded by ‘The Stars Tonight.’

Sound+Motion: Woosh Kinaadeiyi Poetry Slam, Friday, March 25, 7-9 p.m., UAS Egan Lecture Hall. 3rd Annual UAS hosted slam will include the Woosh Kinaadeiyi Band. This friendly competition is open to poets and performers of all ages and all abilities. Sign up to compete at 6:30 p.m. Slam starts at 7 p.m.

 

Jesse Parent – Live Poetry Slam, Saturday, March 26, 8-10 p.m., Hangar Ballroom. Two-time Individual World Poetry Slam runner-up Jesse Parent will be performing works from his book “The Noise that Is Not You” and other works. Also appearing will be Poetic License, Juneau’s hybrid slam/improv group.

The Artist with Ernestine Hayes, Friday, March 25, 7-8:30 p.m., @360 North in the KTOO Building. Multimedia exploration of Hayes writing and her influences. Free.

 

Improv Into Writing workshop, Saturday, March 26, 2-5 p.m., Hangar Ballroom. Jesse Parent will lead the workshop on how to use improvisational techniques to create and empower writing. Registration is $30 and may be reserved online at www.asifest.com or on a space-available basis at the door.

Cuban Salsa Workshop and Party, Friday, March 25, 6-10:30 p.m., Suite907. Learn Cuban Salsa with visiting instructor Heather Haugland. No partner or experience necessary. Wednesday, 6-7:15 p.m. Level 1; 7:15-8:30 p.m. Level 2; Salsa Party to follow 8:30-10:30 p.m. Register and pay at the door. $12 one class, $20 both classes ($8/$15 students).

 

Tlingit Language Learners Group, 6–7 p.m., Mondays, Downtown Juneau Public Library, large conference room. Interested in learning the Tlingit language? Tickets for this up-close look at the Sistine Chapel and cross-cultural masterpieces of art and sculpture are $10 for non-members, $5 for members or free if you join the Friends of the Alaska State Library, Archives and Museum.
