Food is best when it’s home grown.

That’s a statement local master gardener Ed Buyarski can stand behind. He’s been growing, harvesting and eating locally grown fruits, vegetables and herbs for years.

And Saturday, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., locals too will get a chance to taste the fruits of Juneau’s growing season at this year’s Local Food Festival at the Juneau Arts and Culture Center.

Buyarski will be there, amid a host of other local gardeners, crafters, bakers and fisher-people, selling goods made or grown locally.

There’s one thing that is absolute when it comes to fishing in Juneau’s annual Golden North Salmon Derby: If you don’t fish, you can’t win prizes.

Take Tresamae Durand, for example. She turned in a 15.8-pound king salmon on the first day of this year’s derby. That was good enough for 66th place and $2,850 in winnings.

Not a bad day fishing, some would say.

In fact, this year’s derby, which is organized by the Territorial Sportsmen Inc., turned out to be a surprising success, Wayne Regelin, derby co-chair, said.

Power was temporarily interrupted for some Juneau valley residents this morning due to a part malfunction at a substation.

Deb Ferreira, VP director of consumer affairs for the Alaska Electric Light & Power Co., said the outage was caused after a disconnect switch at the Loop substation burned out around 7:20 a.m.

Ferriera said a crew responded and rerouted power. Customers had electricity back by 8 a.m. Once the disconnect switch is fixed, she said crews will disconnect the reroute. There should be no further interruption of service.

A book signing event with local author, photographer and nature expert Bob Armstrong will be held from 1-6 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 13 in the Alaska Geographic bookstore located inside the Mendenhall Glacier Visitor Center.

Branch manager Leo Lanham said visitors to the center have expressed great interest in Armstrong and his books since the beginning of the season.

“We’ve had a great deal of interest from folks who would like to meet him,” Lanham said. “It will be great to recognize the contribution he has made to the community.”
