When George Kuhar was a kid in Austin, Texas, he dreamed of growing up to be equal parts Elvis Presley and Luke Skywalker.

If you’ve been following the trail this local musician has been blazing since he got to town in 2006, this childhood vision might strike you as surprisingly prescient.

Kuhar‘s music is quite varied and not easily described — you really have to listen to it — but generally speaking, two of the styles he plays could be called acoustic gospel and alternative electronic.

When you look at the photographs in Joel Mundy‘s “Harbors” exhibit, opening Friday at the Rookery, at first you’re not sure what you’re seeing. They look almost like paintings, too richly layered to be photos. The effect is achieved through a technique called high dynamic range photography or HDR, and it involves merging multiple exposures of the same frame into one image. Some of the layers are over exposed, to let in as much light as possible, and some are underexposed, to capture the darker shadows.

Descriptions of Juneau — from tour-book synopses to informal conversations — nearly always include some version of the phrase “vibrant arts community.” And those of us who live here know this is not an idle boast. When local musician Lance Mitchell got the chance to interview Krayzie Bone, one of his longtime idols in the music world and a member of the superstar rap group Bone Thugs-n-Harmony, he considered himself happy. He did the interview live on KRNN, as part of his regular radio show, City Beats, which airs on Saturdays at 3 p.m. to check in with the rapper about a recent solo project, The Fixtape Vol. 4. He thought that would be the extent of it.
