ANCHORAGE — Anchorage police have arrested two parents accused of fleeing a hospital Tuesday with their 3-day-old boy when social workers attempted to check on the baby.

Taimato Galo Jr., 32, and Monica Kate Vasquez, 30, are charged with misdemeanor nonsupport, a charge typically levied against a child’s guardian for failing to provide the child appropriate medical care, among other things.

ANCHORAGE — Standing triumphant on Mount McKinley on May 11, 2011, the team of climbers atop North American’s highest peak that night had no idea what terrifying decisions they’d face just below the summit.

One of the four froze to death high on the mountain. Another rode in a basket dangling from a helicopter in one of the highest altitude rescues of its kind. The other two, including the expedition’s guide, narrowly escaped with their lives.

ANCHORAGE — As a blanket of fog lifted Saturday at Fort Richardson National Cemetery, volunteers and the families of military service members fanned out to place holiday wreaths on the snow-capped graves of nearly 800 veterans.

The effort, part of a national program called Wreaths Across America, mirrored ceremonies around the country, with as many as 100,000 wreaths expected to be laid on grave sites at Arlington National Cemetery alone.

ANCHORAGE — The gray hair of Kevin Fryslie stood out last week in a class of Anchorage Police Department recruits — mostly young men with dark crew cuts and short, gelled hair.

Fryslie, a 57-year-old retired FBI agent, is among 29 recruits training to be Anchorage police officers. Despite being forced out of “the Bureau” because of mandatory retirement rules, Fryslie says he isn’t done working yet.
