SITKA — The trustees of Sheldon Jackson College, which closed amidst financial troubles in the summer of 2007, signed over the school’s archives to the state of Alaska Tuesday.

With members of the local media on hand for the small ceremony at Stratton Library, SJC Executive Manager John Holst, and Bob Banghart, chief curator of the state museum system, signed a document formalizing the transfer of a trove of school documents and historical items to the state Division of Libraries, Archives and Museums.

SITKA — Sitka’s Planned Parenthood health center on Lake Street will be closed at the end of January and moved to a smaller location because of funding cutbacks, officials of the reproductive health organization announced this week.

Planned Parenthood said the smaller Sitka health center, at a location that has not yet been selected, will reopen in February, and offer services through “telemedicine.”

The office will be staffed, but not by a certified nurse practitioner.

SITKA — Dennis Baker knew exactly where he wanted to go when he left thae Oosterdam ferry for the short boat ride to Sitka on Thursday.

In Alaska for the first time, along with his girlfriend Norma Jean Harstvedt, Baker walked over to Centennial Hall, where a World War II Navy uniform worn by his father is the centerpiece of a new exhibit at the Sitka Historical Museum.

Owen Baker was a seaman first class who served on the USS Sitka, a navy attack transport ship.
