ANCHORAGE — The united command overseeing the salvage of the Royal Dutch Shell PLC drill barge that ran aground on a remote Alaska island will release minimal information on the vessel until an assessment is completed, a spokeswoman said.

Shell’s drill vessel Kulluk ran aground New Year’s Eve on the southeast side of Sitkalidak Island near Kodiak Island. On Jan. 6, it was pulled off the rocky bottom and towed a day later to protected waters in Kiliuda Bay within Kodiak Island.

ANCHORAGE — A large floating drill rig that ran aground a week ago on a remote Alaska island arrived as planned Monday in the shelter of a Kodiak Island bay after being towed about 45 miles through swells as high as 15 feet, officials said.

The Royal Dutch Shell PLC vessel was lifted off rocks late Sunday and towed away from the southeast side of Sitkalidak Island, where it sat exposed to the full-on fury of Gulf of Alaska winter storms since grounding near the beach there on New Year’s Eve.

ANCHORAGE — Calls for federal scrutiny of Royal Dutch Shell PLC drilling operations in Arctic waters swelled Thursday with a request for a formal investigation by members of Congress.

The House Sustainable Energy and Environment Coalition called on the Interior Department and the Coast Guard to jointly investigate the New Year’s Eve grounding of the Shell drill vessel Kulluk on a remote Gulf of Alaska Island, and a previous incident connected to Arctic offshore drilling operations in 2012.

The coalition is made up of 46 House Democrats.

ANCHORAGE — One of two drill ships used by Royal Dutch Shell PLC for Arctic drilling off Alaska’s coast is under investigation for problems with crew safety and pollution control equipment, the Coast Guard said Thursday.

The Noble Discoverer, owned by Noble Corp., was ordered for more than two weeks to remain in port in Seward while deficiencies were addressed.

The Coast Guard has cleared the vessel to leave for a shipyard in the Pacific Northwest and it likely will begin the trip under tow before the weekend, Shell Alaska spokesman Curtis Smith said.
