KETCHIKAN — Jeff Fitzwater explored small-town images, familiar characters and the art of compositing photographs for his Main Street Gallery solo exhibit, “A Rockwellian Ketchikan.”

He started with classic paintings by Norman Rockwell, famous for his Saturday Evening Post covers from the 1920s through the late 1960s. Fitzwater said he was browsing through a Seattle arts magazine when he saw an article titled, “Rock Your Inner Rockwell,” about an artist’s modern-day translation of many of Rockwell’s pieces.

KETCHIKAN — Jeanette Sweetman plucked myriad threads from the Ketchikan arts community as she grew up, weaving them with her natural talents to become the professional young artist she is today.

A photographer, painter, business woman and 2012 Ketchikan High School graduate, Sweetman has learned many lessons along the way.

“You can’t be shy,” she said.

KETCHIKAN — Fifth-grader Nathaniel Johnson frowned in concentration as he bent over his glowbug fly clamped in a vice in a Fawn Mountain Elementary classroom recently.

As the fly-fishing workshop teacher and Fawn Mountain counselor, Norm Noggle, helped to wrap the small blob of pink foam to the hook with kevlar thread, Nathaniel explained his outlook on fishing.

“I don’t care what fish we go after, I just want to go fishing.”

KETCHIKAN — Ketchikan Youth Court’s induction ceremony for 10 graduates recently included a unique bonus: the admission of the organization’s new director, Glenn Brown, to the Alaska Bar.

Brown said that Ketchikan Superior Court Judge Trevor Stephens, who teaches most of the member classes, came up with the idea to swear him in as an Alaska Bar member with the Youth Court inductees, when his notice of admission came only a month prior to the Dec. 14 ceremony.
