Long before Deflategate, Bill Belichick replaced New York Jets coach Bill Parcells as the Pro Bowl coach. This was after the 1998 season. The Jets were AFC runner-ups and health reasons made Parcells cede to Belichick, his defensive coordinator.
At the opening staff meeting in Hawaii, according to a source, Belichick said: “OK, how are we going to steal (the NFC team’s) signs?”
A couple coaches chuckled. This was the Pro Bowl, the least-competitive game in the history of games. Why steal signs?
“Business will be conducted the way business is conducted,” Belichick said.
