Graduate makes his mark on new field

KODIAK — David Anderson never played on Joe Floyd Track and Field’s new artificial turf, but the former Kodiak football player has left his mark on the multimillion-dollar field.

Anderson, a 2012 Kodiak High School graduate, is the artist behind the bear logo that covers the middle of the field. When he designed the logo during his senior year, he didn’t realize it would end up on Kodiak’s new playing surface.

“It was a complete and utter surprise to me,” Anderson said. “I am honored. How often do you get to make something that everybody will see and enjoy?”

Kodiak man a heavyweight in bodybuilding contest

KODIAK, Alaska (AP) — Kodiak’s Lindsay Knight added a pair of bodybuilding trophies to his already impressive hall of fame career this month.

Knight teamed with Susan Johnson of Boise, Idaho, to win the mixed pairs division at the 29th Annual Alaska State Pro-Am Bodybuilding, Fitness, Figure and Bikini Championships in Anchorage.

Knight, known as the godfather of Alaska bodybuilding, also placed second March 24 in the men’s grandmasters over 50 division, which ended his run as a six-time champion.

KODIAK — “We got one leg and in a wheelchair and we are busting it out,” personal trainer Ron Williams told Mary Joy Smith during a workout session outside her Kodiak garage.

With the afternoon sun beating down on the two, Smith continued her workout with more vigor than before.

“And how old am I?” she asked moments after completing a set of tricep pull-downs with exercise bands connected to the top of her garage.

“Eighty-three,” Williams answered.

Kodiak brothers flying high with longtime aviation tour business

KODIAK — Kingfisher Air Inc. has the distinction of having two unique floatplanes in its fleet.

The Bush Hawk planes are white with red trim, but that isn’t why they are unique.

“There are only about 30 of them in the world, and we have two of them,” Kingfisher co-owner Kyle Eaton said.

The planes were built in 2000 and 2004, which also puts them in a league of their own, because most floatplanes in Kodiak were manufactured in the early 1980s, Eaton said.
