Wounded warriors take walk in Fairbanks

FAIRBANKS — Slowly but steadily, the soldiers came.

Some swung by on crutches, while others progressed step-by-careful-step on prosthetic legs.

One young man, missing both legs and an arm, gripped an American flag in his remaining hand as he was pushed along in a wheelchair.

With others, the damage was less noticeable, but a closer looked revealed a shiny ridge of scar tissue or a missing eye.

The 35 wounded warriors, accompanied by friends and family members, were participants in a memorial walk held at Fort Wainwright Thursday morning.

Permits approved for new Usibelli Alaska coal mine

FAIRBANKS — Usibelli Coal has received permitting from the Department of Natural Resources to open a new pit mine northeast of Healy.

Jumbo Dome Mine will be about six miles from Two Bulls Mine, which Usibelli has operated for about 10 years. Both mines will extract from the same coal seam, a strategy that helps keep production costs down, according to mine officials.

Every year animals dumped at transfer stations

FAIRBANKS — It seems like it wouldn’t be hard to tell the difference between a Fairbanks North Star Borough waste transfer site and an animal shelter, but every year animals are left at transfer sites around the Fairbanks area, tied to Dumpsters or locked in their cages and left exposed to the elements.

In a place that sees the extreme temperatures Fairbanks does, this type of treatment can cross the line from being simply callous to willfully cruel.

Students camp out to raise money for homeless

FAIRBANKS — University of Alaska Fairbanks students are putting their ideals to the test this week as they camp out and stand in the cold to combat homelessness.

The UAF Honors Student Council sponsors and participates in the event, designed to raise awareness about homelessness and raise money for homeless programs. Students will maintain a continuous presence for six days outside Constitution Hall on the UAF campus, sleeping in tents at night and huddling around a small barrel fire by day, the Fairbanks Daily News-Miner reported Thursday.

FAIRBANKS — Laurielynne Soule and Dave Hendrickson are a couple who can’t say no to someone in need. Throughout the years, they have added three adopted and several foster children to their blended family, along the way picking up one half-blind pony, a fat goat, three ferrets and a dog. This would make for a full house if it weren’t for the fact that the Soule-Hendricksons no longer have one.

The amount of land consumed by Alaska wildfires each year varies from hundreds of thousands of acres to as much as 7 million. The men and women who fight these fires get most of the recognition and glory, as they well deserve for doing such dangerous and grueling work.
