Firefighters extinguished a fire on the second-story of a single-family home in the 4600 block of Thane Road early Sunday morning, saving the majority of the house which remained standing.

No injuries were reported, and the family evacuated the home before firefighters arrived on scene, Capital City Fire/Rescue Chief Richard Etheridge said.

“Preliminary, it sounds like it might have been ashes from cleaning out a fireplace or a barbecue or something like that, but the deputy fire marshal is taking a look at it right now,” Etheridge said in an interview at the scene.

Capital City Fire/Rescue said they responded to a cooking fire in a kitchen at a Great Western Street apartment at 11 a.m. Thursday.

The fire was extinguished by the resident before firefighters arrived on scene, according to acting Captain Mark Fuette.

“The occupant was cooking, left the room, the food boiled over and caught fire,” Fuette said. “Occupant returned, extinguished with baking soda and by turning the stove off.”

Fuette said the resident was ventilating the area when firefighters arrived. CCFR ensured the fire was extinguished before returning to service.

Calling for an end to the epidemic of domestic violence, sexual assault and child sexual abuse in Alaska, more than a hundred people gathered at the steps of the Capitol in downtown Juneau Thursday afternoon to partake in the third annual “Choose Respect” rally.

State legislators and U.S. Representative Don Young addressed the crowd before marching down Main Street, as participants carried homemade poster board signs that read “iRespect,” “Safe homes” and “I believe you.”

A 22-year-old Juneau man was charged last Friday with raping and assaulting a woman he knew in May 2012.

A grand jury convened by the Juneau District Attorney’s Office indicted Travis Logan Lies on one count of first-degree sexual assault for knowingly engaging in sexual penetration with the alleged victim without her consent.

That’s an unclassified felony that can be punishable by up to 99 years in prison.
