It didn’t take long for the Ellsworth House to burn Saturday.
Orange flames poured from the log cabin’s bedroom windows, shattering glass and torching the roof and siding. A huge plume of gray smoke, visible from miles away, billowed above the property.
Traffic slowed on Back Loop Road as drivers gawked at the sight. A crowd of onlookers gathered on the highway verge.
“There’s not many times when a house burning is a good thing,” Capital City Fire/Rescue Captain Chad Cameron said, among the dozens of firefighters who snapped pictures of the event.
