Juneau is proud to announce it will be hosting the second bi-annual disaster “Preparedness Expo” in September, which is National Preparedness month. The expo is organized to help residents learn about threats present in Juneau and how best to respond to them, how to prepare a home emergency kit and what to do in case of an emergency.

Four local residents were indicted Friday in connection to a bad check scheme that the Juneau Police Department investigated last summer.

Prosecutors say the codefendants worked together to write bad checks to banks in Juneau and pocketed the cash while knowing the checks would not be honored by the bank. The checks were “bad” since they came from accounts that were either closed, frozen, blocked or had insufficient funds.

A Juneau resident who says she misunderstood a question on her public assistance application for food stamps and temporary housing was court-ordered to repay $11,500 in benefits for which she was not eligible.

Fialele Faatoia, 44, admitted stealing from the state Division of Public Assistance earlier this year, and on Monday she received a suspended imposition of sentence in Juneau Superior Court.

Police say a bus passenger was taken to the hospital with apparent non-life threatening injuries after a crash on Glacier Avenue near Ross Way at about 2:21 p.m. Monday.

Sgt. Chris Gifford said in a release that a 2005 Subaru Forester traveling inbound on Glacier attempted to make a U-turn on the roadway in front of a city bus.

The Subaru was unable to turn completely and backed up into the path of the bus. The bus was unable to stop in time and struck the Subaru in a “t-bone” manner, the release states.
