KODIAK — One month ago, seine fisherman Luke Anderson had the toughest day of his life.

On June 18, Anderson’s boat, the Scandia, sank off Harvester Island at the end of a days-long fight against the ocean. Anderson and his crew safely abandoned ship in their 17-foot seine skiff, but the hardest decision of the day wasn’t to leave the Scandia. It was leaving Anderson’s terrified dog, Bo, onboard.

“We tried and tried and tried, but there wasn’t a guy on the skiff who wasn’t bawling their eyes out,” Anderson told the Kodiak Daily Mirror.

KODIAK — Alaska has played its cards. Now it’s Lockheed’s turn at the table.

Earlier this spring, the Alaska Legislature, at Gov. Sean Parnell’s urging, approved $25 million for a new launch pad at the Kodiak Launch Complex.

The approval came after aerospace giant Lockheed-Martin picked Kodiak as the West Coast launch site for a new medium-lift rocket. Along with the pick, Lockheed pledged to support $100 million in additional financing for the launch pad.

KODIAK — When Petty Officer 1st Class Jeffry Crews was awoken by his phone at 11:30 p.m. Friday, he knew he was in for a long day.

That long day turned into a long weekend and now a long week, as cleanup continues on Kodiak’s largest fuel spill in more than a decade.

Up to 15,000 gallons of No. 2 diesel leaked into Chiniak Bay after the U.S. Army landing craft Monterey struck Kalsin Reef at or near Humpback Rock just before Friday turned into Saturday.

KODIAK — Steve Harvey is among a rare breed.

The veteran pilot has been flying since 1966, making him the most experienced regular flier on Kodiak Island. He’s a favorite among bear hunters and fishermen, some of whom have been hiring him as a pilot for decades.

His airplane might be even better known. Harvey’s Grumman Widgeon is one of a handful still flying in the United States, more than 70 years after the first one took to the water and then to the air in July 1940.
