KODIAK — At one end of the city of Kodiak is a gala display — more than 10,000 lights synchronized with broadcast music by an automated computer program.

At the other end is another accomplishment of winter wonder, a 30-foot Christmas tree molded from recycled materials, standing tall in white light above Mission Beach.

Working separately, Dave Hilty and Andy Crawley have created two of the biggest displays on Kodiak Island this holiday season.

Crawley, whose display is on Otmeloi Way, started late.

KODIAK — It’s the final chapter for the Next Page.

Kodiak Island’s only bookstore will close for good Dec. 31 after seven years in business.

“It was just a decision we had to finally make,” said owner Melony Lechner.

The bookstore has been for sale for about a year, and while there were some offers, Lechner said, no one followed through.

“I just need (a job) with a little more security,” she said. “Unfortunately, self-employment doesn’t give you health insurance or retirement benefits.”

KODIAK — The Weather Channel received what may have been its first barroom round of applause Wednesday night, as “Coast Guard: Alaska” made its TV debut in front of an appreciative crowd at the Golden Anchor.

The social hall at Kodiak’s U.S. Coast Guard base held about 50 appreciative fans who applauded, laughed and teased cast members in attendance as the new show was seen for the first time by some of the people it stars.

KODIAK — A new miniseries will bring Kodiak to Russian TV viewers sometime next year, if all goes as planned.

A five-person film crew visited the island’s largest city and Karluk for four days of filming and interviews for “The Russian-American Project” before heading to Sitka for another five days of work.

The project is being funded by Mosfilm, the largest film studio in Russia.
