The former gas station by Walmart won’t stay empty long. Some tour and expedition businesses are working together to make it their home.

Northern Safety Operations, Alaska Icefield Expeditions and IditaGrow will have offices, transitory housing and training facilities there. Renovation of the 5,300-square-foot building is underway with creating full living spaces, kitchen and offices.

Northern Safety Operations Executive Director Joel Probst said it feels good to turn the empty station, which he called an eyesore, into something useful.

The Glacier Valley Rotary Club is getting ready for its ceremony to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks. The public event will start at 9:40 a.m. Sept. 11 at the memorial in Riverside Rotary Park. It will conclude at 10:15 a.m.

This ceremony honors those killed in and those who responded to the Sept. 11, 2011 attacks, and Juneau’s first responders. The Rotary states this is part of its promise to always remember the event.

It’s official. OfficeMax has signed on the dotted line and will open its first Juneau store at the Nugget Mall in early 2012.

The office supply store will occupy 17,000 square feet near Nugget Alaskan Outfitter. It will carry office supplies, technology products, furniture and print and document services. Around 25 associates are expected to be employed there.

The Regulatory Commission of Alaska has issued a week-long extension for its decision on Alaska Electric Light & Power’s requested 24 percent increase to the energy component section of electrical rates. The decision is now scheduled to be released Sept. 2.

RCA reports that AEL&P, Juneau People’s Power Project and the state Attorney General's office have all consented to the extension. They are the three parties to the case

The original decision was due on July 27, at which point the RCA requested a 30-day extension to Aug. 26.
