Government leaders stopped by Tuesday’s Juneau School District Board of Education meeting to speak on hazing issues in the district.
Rep. Cathy Muñoz (R-Juneau) and Alaska Department of Education and Early Development Commissioner Mike Hanley were both supportive of what the district is doing to address May’s incident and prevent hazing in the future.
Muñoz told the board hazing is by no means a new issue in Juneau.
“I graduated from Juneau schools in 1982,” she said. “Hazing existed then.”
