The Kake Masters stayed alive in the 67th Annual Gold Medal Basketball Tournament with a 66-65 double-overtime win against Juneau’s C.B. General in masters bracket elimination play as Willis Cavanaugh and Kip Howard showed flashes of what play was like in their younger years.

Cavanaugh scored 21 points, including five triples in the second half that took Kake from down eight to tying the score at 57-57 as play ended in the second half.

The Hoonah Masters looked like the Hoonah youngsters as they found some long range accuracy and mixed it with a bit of inside-the-key toughness to defeat Juneau city league masters division champions C.B. Green 58-53 in the opening game of the 67th Annual Gold Medal Basketball Tournament at Juneau-Douglas High School on Sunday. C. B. Green was added to the tournament when Klawock pulled out due to a roster dispute.

Louie White led the way for Hoonah, hitting 12 of his game-high 19 points in the second half including four crucial free throws in the final 30 seconds.

Two of the best Mixed Martial Arts fighters in Alaska went toe-to-toe for the first ever Alaska Beatdown Southeast Alaska MMA Lightweight Championship on Friday night in Centennial Hall. The result was an action packed bout that finished four-and-a-third rounds earlier than scheduled.

Fairbanks’ Eddie Hoch forced Juneau’s Craig Reishus to tap out in the first round of their scheduled five round bout.

The Juneau-Douglas Crimson Bears have a history against the Wasilla Warriors, and most of it is at the state championship level. JDHS beat the Warriors for the 2010 title, lost to the Warriors in the 2011 big game by six points, lost by 10 points in the 2008 opening game, lost by three in the 2007 championship, won by two in the 2006 third-place game, and won the championship in 2005 while the Warriors finished fifth. JDHS lost the 2004 championship to Dimond after beating Wasilla by 10 points in the semifinals. The teams go back even farther, but more important is the present.
