The Juneau-Douglas High School girl’s basketball team wrapped up the number one seed for the Region V tournament by sweeping Ketchikan 42-36 on Saturday and 45-43 Friday at the Kings home gym.

The Crimson Bears (5-1 Southeast Conference, 12-10 Overall) held the Lady Kings (4-4 SE) to just four points in the opening quarter on Saturday, opening a 9-4 advantage and holding a 19-16 halftime lead.

“It was a pretty great game,” JDHS coach Dee Boster said. “It was a really good win for us on the road.”

The Peninsula College undersized forward posted hard, turned, took a pass from an undersized guard and made history for the Pirates.

It is a shot that has been etched into every Juneau-Douglas basketball fan’s memory as far back as the two tiny tots laced up their shoes in HoopTime action.

The Thunder Mountain High School girl's basketball team continues to give head coach Tanya Nizich grey hairs as they fell for the third straight night in Fairbanks by nine points or less, this time to a strong West Valley Wolfpack team 49-48.

The Falcons (7-14 overall, 1-5 southeast conference) got a game-high 18 points from sophomore Ashley Young, 11 points apiece from senior Jonelle Staveland and junior Micheala Demmert, five points from freshman Ava Tompkins, and three from senior Eyerus Tingley.

TMHS hit 6-11 at the charity stripe and West Valley went 10-12.

The Thunder Mountain High School boy's basketball team won their fifth game in a row, all of them on the road, and the last three in consecutive nights at Fairbanks, by outlasting the West Valley Wolfpack 70-63 on Friday night.

"It was obviously higher points than we are normally putting up," TMHS coach John Blasco said. "But they are a fast paced team."

Four Falcons scored in double figures and TMHS scored in double digits each quarter.
