Thunder Mountain High School Falcons’ seniors Josh and Vili Tupou spoke softly on Friday night against the Ketchikan Kings, but they played basketball with a very big presence.

“The Tupou boys are hard to rattle,” Ketchikan coach Eric Stockhausen said. “They did a good job of getting their bigs the ball and controlling what pressure we put on them.”

Despite tallying just six points between them, the Tupou duo over powered the guard oriented line up of the Kings.

The Thunder Mountain High School Falcons basketball teams will be going up against Southeastern Conference rival Ketchikan this weekend.

The Falcons’ boys (4-2) will host the Kings (4-5) while the Falcons’ girls (0-2) travel to face the Ketchikan Lady Kings (2-3).

It has been three weeks since the TMHS varsity teams have been in game competition.

“We are looking forward to this weekend,” TMHS coach John Blasco said. “Three weeks is too long to just be sitting around and practicing. Hopefully we will pick up where we left off.”

The Juneau-Douglas Crimson Bears boy’s basketball team won the battle but East Anchorage won the war.

“This is huge,” JDHS senior center Jeff Pusich said. “It shows the rest of the state that we are for real and team should not take us for granted. East is definitely a powerhouse in the state and this is just the beginning of what we can do.”

In the Capital City Classic final game, the Crimson Bears downed the Thunderbirds 56-53 to make a three-way tie among the two 4A schools and 3A Sitka (West Valley went 0-3). East would win the title do to point differentials in wins.

The Juneau-Douglas High School hockey team received little holiday cheer from the visiting Homer Mariners over the weekend at Treadwell Arena in non-conference action.

Playing the part of the holiday Grinch, North Star Conference Homer iced the Mid Alaska Conference Crimson Bears 4-1 on Friday and 5-2 Saturday.

The hard skating Crimson Bears (5-10-1 overall) continued their first period slow start on Friday by surrendering two goals in three minutes.
