When Crimson Bears’ junior 2011 All-Railbelt First Team selection Philip Fenumiai leans down to take the first snap during the large school state football semifinal game against Service on Saturday he will face a huge task.

The Cougars boast, roughly, 22 All-Cook Inlet Conference selections. At the top of that list is first-team junior defensive back Matthew Ilalio, whose task will be to prevent the JDHS offense from moving up field, that includes Fenumiai, his cousin.

The Juneau-Douglas High School tennis team is poised to make some “racquet” this weekend in the Alaska School Activities Association 2011 state Tennis Championships at the Anchorage Alaska Clubs North and East.

“It should be a really good event,” JDHS coach Amy Skilbred said. “Juneau-Douglas has always done well at state in one or more of the events.”

The Crimson Bears’ mixed doubles team of Emma Good and Johnny Joyce are seeded second in the tournament behind the only team they lost to this season.

The Juneau-Douglas High School Crimson Bears cross-country team celebrated the end of their 2011 season with an awards banquet on Saturday. Five awards were given for both the girls and boys team.

“I am going to miss every one and every thing about running,” senior Jesse Miller said. “I have so many friends and there are so many memories I am going to have my entire life thanks to cross country. Even if I continue to run through college I don’t think it will replace the high school days.”

Thunder Mountain’s season ended in heartbreak Friday in a 46-6 loss to Homer in the semifinals of the medium-sized schools state football championships.

The win extends an improbable season for Homer, which according to Coach Cam Wyatt has never made the playoffs. He said this squad holds the best record in the program’s history. It brought tears to the Thunder Mountain sideline and a team that refused to give up in spite of lingering injuries.
