NHL returns with most teams on ice for 1st skate

PLYMOUTH, Mich. — On a sheet of ice a few miles from sandy beaches, the Los Angeles Kings finally got to begin their quest to hoist the Stanley Cup again.

Several hundred fans packed wooden bleachers in El Segundo, Calif., on Sunday, eager to watch the Kings practice four months after the NHL lockout started and seven months after their favorite team was crowned champion for the first time.

A skate that would usually draw a few dozen fans in the past turned into a place to be because hockey is back.

Falcons top Lions 31-18 for home-field advantage

DETROIT — Matt Ryan got what he wanted.

Calvin Johnson was forced to settle for what he could get.

Ryan matched a career high with four touchdown passes, two to Roddy White, to help the Atlanta Falcons beat the Detroit Lions 31-18 Saturday night and earn home-field advantage throughout the NFC playoffs.

“It’s great,” Ryan said. “Our confidence is high and our experience — good and bad — has helped us. The key is to keep the focus where it’s been.”

In yet another loss, Johnson had a record-breaking night.

Lions' Suh fined $30,000; says kick not on purpose

ALLEN PARK, Mich. — Ndamukong Suh’s reputation for being a nasty player was born as an NFL rookie.

Suh slammed two quarterbacks to the ground by grabbing their helmets two years ago, and his image became even more notorious last season when he infamously stomped on an opponent.

Texans top Lions 34-31 in OT

DETROIT — Jim Schwartz threw a challenge flag when he didn’t need to and the Houston Texans made him regret it.

Shayne Graham’s 32-yard field goal with 2:21 left in overtime lifted Houston to a 34-31 win over the Detroit Lions on Thursday after their coach broke an NFL rule by attempting to challenge a scoring play.

“Obviously that’s a big break in the game for us,” Houston coach Gary Kubiak said. “But I think you make your breaks when you work your tail off.”

Lions top Seahawks 28-24 with 20 seconds left

DETROIT — The Detroit Lions drafted Titus Young last year, envisioning him as the receiver to eventually replace veteran Nate Burleson.

It has happened sooner than planned, and Young is making the most of his opportunity.

Young caught his second touchdown pass from Matthew Stafford on a 1-yard slant with 20 seconds left, lifting Detroit to a 28-24 win over the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday.
