ANCHORAGE — When Sarah and River Bean cleared old timber to start their farm near Palmer more than two decades ago, one of their first chores was recruiting customers for the coming harvest. It was a way to build a base of buyers and make their love of farming a viable business.

Their customers, in turn, got fresh vegetables all summer long.

Cost woes plague Anchorage port expansion; scaled-down version proposed as alternative

ANCHORAGE — A controversial project to expand the Port of Anchorage and replace its old docks may be abandoned as its costs continue to escalate.

At Anchorage Mayor Dan Sullivan’s request, the port has proposed a scaled-back version that would shore up old, corroded pilings and finish two new barge berths and one berth for ships. But the big cargo carriers that bring in most of the goods consumed by Alaskans would remain at the old dock, which the port says would fail in a major earthquake.

ANCHORAGE — All the Mat-Su Borough wanted was a ferryboat. One that would take passengers and vehicles on the short hop across Knik Arm between Port MacKenzie and Anchorage, provide a new way to travel to coastal communities around Cook Inlet, and improve access to undeveloped borough land where business might take root.

Something simple, rugged and reliable, the borough said.

What it actually got is a unique, shape-shifting, ice-breaking, $78 million landing craft named Susitna.
