Several groups in Juneau have offered public displays of support for the “Idle No More” indigenous rights movement that originated in Canada, with at least three small “flashmobs” being held around town.

On Friday afternoon, a handful of people donned traditional tribal regalia, played drums and sang clan songs at Sealaska Plaza in downtown Juneau. A small crowd of perhaps two dozen gathered, some carrying small signs with “Idle No More” printed on them.

Bobby Jones teaches math and science at Dzantik’i Heeni Middle School, but students in his class can always expect to get an education beyond that from him.

Jones, who has taught at Dzantik’i Heeni for 15 years now, said Friday — by way of detailing his class’ latest project, handmade fleece-tie blankets to be donated to shelters in Juneau — that he has been getting his students involved in volunteerism and community service for years.

“My classrooms have always done community service projects each year,” Jones said.

At a lightly attended “school summit” Thursday evening, the superintendent of the Juneau School District, school principals and other district staff discussed data for Juneau schools.

The data delved into was, in large part, drawn from Standards Based Assessment testing for the 2011-12 school year, which is used to measure schools against statewide standards in order to assess Adequate Yearly Progress, a requirement of the federal No Child Left Behind program.

In the 2011-12 school year, only three out of 14 Juneau schools met AYP in all categories.

While one of the runners-up in 2011’s City and Borough of Juneau Assembly races is taking another bite at the apple this year, two other candidates from last year who fell short have decided against repeat bids – for now, at least.

Juneau businesswoman and substitute teacher Geny Del Rosario, who finished a distant third in last year’s hotly contested race for the areawide Assembly seat now occupied by Assembly member Carlton Smith, said she has other commitments that prevent her from running this year.
