Four consolidated city-boroughs in Southeast Alaska have chosen new mayors this month, and voters in the nearby Yukon territorial capital of Whitehorse, a sister city of Juneau, went to the polls Thursday and elected a new mayor as well.

As of press time, the results were not yet known, though Dan Curtis was leading in preliminary returns. Curtis, who ran unsuccessfully as a Liberal Party candidate for the Yukon Territorial Legislature last year, is executive director of the nonprofit Skills Canada Yukon.

Yakutat Mayor Dave Stone failed to secure another term in office Tuesday as voters in Alaska’s least-populous borough elected Cindy Bremner as his successor.

Bremner, a former president and chief executive officer of Yak-tat Kwaan, Inc., and a former member of the City and Borough of Yakutat Assembly, captured 104 votes to Stone’s 79 in unofficial Election Night returns.

Stone had no opponent in the race until just before the candidate filing period closed (http://bit.ly/Td6E57).

Faced with class sizes well above the districtwide target at Harborview Elementary School and a group of concerned parents clamoring for remedy, the Juneau School District Board of Education moved at its meeting Tuesday not to fund an additional teacher at the school from the district’s budget reserve, which is already below target for the year.

David Means, the JSD’s director of administrative services, set the tone for the grim discussion by presenting both the latest enrollment numbers for the district and the district’s estimated ending fund balance for fiscal year 2013.

Juneau’s new mayor, Merrill Sanford, was sworn in Monday evening at a special meeting of the City and Borough of Juneau Assembly that saw outgoing Mayor Bruce Botelho and Deputy Mayor David G. Stone say their goodbyes after nine consecutive years of Assembly service.

The characteristically laconic Stone, after wryly remarking that he is “a man of few words,” singled out fellow Assemblymembers Randy Wanamaker and Johan Dybdahl, both of whom served during much of Stone’s time on the Assembly, for special praise during his remarks as an outgoing assemblymember.
