Attendees of an Alaska Native Vote event at Elizabeth Peratrovich Hall Thursday had the opportunity to learn about the voting process, get registered to vote and more.

The event, supported by the Central Council of the Tlingit and Haida Indian Tribes of Alaska, Sealaska Corp., the League of Women Voters, the Southeast Alaska Regional Health Consortium, Alaska Native Brotherhood Camp 70, and the Tlingit-Haida Regional Housing Authority, was aimed at empowering Native residents to organize politically and participate in upcoming elections.

Hours ahead of a 4:30 p.m. deadline for write-in candidates to file with the City Clerk’s Office on Thursday, Juneau therapist Dixie Hood filed to contest the City and Borough of Juneau Assembly District 2 seat in next Tuesday’s election.

Former Juneau Police Capt. Jerry Nankervis was previously the only declared candidate for the seat, which is being vacated by Ruth Danner.

Work on Basin Road Trestle Bridge in downtown Juneau is not done, and completion of its reconstruction will prompt its closure for two more months this year, an Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities spokeswoman reported Wednesday.

The narrow wooden bridge provides access to both Perseverence Trail and the Last Chance Mining Museum. During its closure, the DOT&PF’s Brenda Hewitt wrote in an email, hikers wishing to reach Perseverence Trail will have to use the Gold Creek Flume Trail.

After graduating from Juneau-Douglas High School in 2003, Alec Haralovich enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. He served three tours of duty in the Iraq War, coming away from one with a Purple Heart after being wounded by an improvised explosive device.

While taking courses in international studies at Indiana University, Staff Sgt. Haralovich has remained a member of the Marine Corps Reserve. He was deployed last year for his fourth tour.
