In its effort to dig out of a budget crisis, the Juneau School District this year reduced the number of school nurses it employs from ten to eight.

That means Laura Vivian spends the first part of her day at Floyd Dryden Middle School, and midway through it, she gets in her car and drives to Dzantik’i Heeni Middle School, where she works in the afternoon.

Vivian is concerned about students at the four schools that lost their full-time nurses this year, she said.

The Juneau School District and Juneau Education Association, the union representing most of Juneau’s teachers, ratified a final collective bargaining agreement this week, the JSD announced late Wednesday.

The text of the agreement was not yet available to the public as of Thursday evening, but it is known the contract is only a one-year deal and negotiators will have to return to the bargaining table in just a few months to hammer out another contract beyond the 2012-13 school year.

Juneau Parks and Recreation now has a Twitter feed to keep members of the public appraised of what is going on in the City and Borough of Juneau’s parks.

The Twitter account @JuneauParks was the brainchild of Chris Cote, parks maintenance crew leader for the department, who said he came up with the idea last month.

“It just kind of came to me,” said Cote. “It seems like everyone’s on the Internet these days, on social media sites.”

The Alaska Marine Highway System rolled out a new logo to commemorate the state-run ferry system’s 50th anniversary Monday, announcing the news to subscribers of its email newsletter.

The new logo contains “a lot of symbolic things,” said Mike Neussl, the Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities’ deputy commissioner for marine operations, and was adopted as part of the 50th anniversary celebration at the AMHS.

“In celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Marine Highway System, we decided we needed a logo to commemorate that,” Neussl explained.
