The three new members of the Eaglecrest Ski Area’s board of directors got a crash course Thursday afternoon at the board’s first meeting since appointments were made last month.

Fifty minutes of time was scheduled at the start of the meeting to help recent appointees Alexis Howard, Carlton Heine and Bruce Garrison acclimate to their roles as board members.

“Most of the first part of the meeting is specifically for their benefit,” said Wayne Stevens, the board’s president, before the meeting started.

A design for the Juneau Maritime Center, a proposed three-story building that would house the port director’s office, as well as public space with interpretive displays, won the approval of the Docks and Harbors board Thursday night – but the center has a long way to go before it can be built.

Port Engineer Gary Gillette gave a presentation to board members on options for the Maritime Center, concluding that “Option E” is the preferred plan for Docks and Harbors and its partners, which include the Parks and Recreation Advisory Council and the Whale Committee.

Juneau residents may experience some water discoloration and potential service disruptions starting next week, the City and Borough of Juneau Water Utility announced Wednesday.

The Water Utility will be conducting a flush of Juneau’s water distribution system, starting in downtown on Monday and gradually working its way toward the Tee Harbor area, according to the announcement.

Work is expected to last until about Aug. 15 and to take place Mondays through Fridays between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.

Another candidate is throwing his hat in the ring for this year’s open District 1 seat on the City and Borough of Juneau Assembly.

Paul Nowlin, 35, said Tuesday that he is running for the seat being vacated by Assembly Member David G. Stone because he wants to “give back” to Juneau.

“Juneau’s always been my home. I’ve moved down south a couple of times, but it’s more or less just concreted … that Juneau is my home,” said Nowlin, who works as an office manager at Petro Marine Services. “Juneau’s always been good to me.”
