The anglers win the prizes at the Golden North Salmon Derby, but behind the scenes, a crew of volunteers gets and keeps it going.
If you weighed your fish in at Amalga Harbor, it was a crew of women wearing earrings a fish could love (hoochies) who helped you. This year, dock crew member Tracy Balovich said, there were seven women who call themselves “The Hoochie Mamas.”
Balovich used to collect prizes from businesses sponsoring the derby, but she wanted to get a little more hands-on.
“When the weather’s great, this is the place to be,” she said.
