ANCHORAGE — Wolf-dogs kept on chains and behind stockade fencing at an Alaska tourist attraction are going to live out their days in a California sanctuary.

The state for years has been looking for a solution for the more than two dozen wolf-dogs at Werner Schuster’s Wolf Country USA after deciding in 2002 to crack down on the ownership and sale of wolf hybrids in Alaska.

ANCHORAGE — The residents of Nome could be looking at a very costly winter: $9-a-gallon gasoline.

The coastal city of more than 3,500 residents that is known for the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race is iced-in, and a massive winter storm this month prevented a barge that usually carries fuel from getting to shore.

The most likely plan is to fly it in, but it would be costly and could be a logistical nightmare.

“It could be pretty outrageous, the prices,” said Jeremy Nassuk, Nome airport fueler for Crowley Marine Services, Inc.

ANCHORAGE — Three grizzly bear cubs orphaned when their mother was shot are romping and playing in the snow at the Alaska Zoo, but zookeepers hope they don’t get too comfortable.

That’s because the 11-month-old brown fuzz balls, which now stand about 21/2 feet tall and weigh between 100 pounds and 125 pounds, are headed to the Detroit Zoo in about two weeks, zoo officials said Monday.

ANCHORAGE — When Alaskan Diane McEachern heard about the Occupy Wall Street protests, she thought, “How can I get in on that?”

Soon after, she marched onto the tundra near her home, where she was pictured with a homemade cardboard sign bearing her protest message: “Occupy the Tundra.”
