Who is the Indian in the museum?
“The narrative ... is crafted largely by the museum, and not the Native communities,” Portland Art Museum Curator of Native American Art Deana Dartt said.
Dartt is hoping to change how the Native story is told — and she thinks the Portland Art Museum is ready to do it.
“I’m native, coastal Chumash from Santa Barbara,” Dartt said. “I’ve always been interested in our art forms and our history and how museums represent us.”
She said she grew up in a place, Los Angeles, where “Indians are invisible.”
