EAGLE RIVER — High-schoolers from Anchorage, the Mat-Su Valley and Kenai Peninsula put their engineering skills to the test during a two-day robotics competition Feb. 15-16 at Eagle River High.

The results couldn’t have been better for the hosts.

All 19 Eagle River students, broken into five teams, qualified for the state robotics tournament March 8-9 at UAA.

The Cyber Wolves, made up of Thor Austin, Erik Korzon and Nathaniel Lunod, set a new state record of 410 points in the qualifying round.

The high score surprised the team, Korzon said.

EAGLE RIVER — There’s going green — and then there’s the Karns family.

Curt and Cindee Karns’ Eagle River home epitomizes sustainable living. Located just two miles from the Eagle River Nature Center, their house not only limits waste, it turns waste into a resource.

The south-facing front of the house contains a large solarium complete with wetlands, a koi pond, a brook and small waterfall. Its 24 large pane glass windows allow the sun to naturally warm the solarium.

EAGLE RIVER — For more than half a century, “Yellow Rock” has been an Eagle River landmark.

In recent years, however, the boulder’s bright yellow coat has been buried under numerous layers of spray paint.

But one man is determined to restore the rock located on the corner of Wren Lane and Eagle River Road to its “natural” shade.

About a month ago, Jeff Bowers applied a new shiny coat to Yellow Rock — and has been checking it daily, repainting the landmark any time it’s been tagged.
