Ketchikan girl gets a lift from shop student

KETCHIKAN — A Houghtaling Elementary School student is sitting pretty thanks to Ketchikan High School junior Cameron Showalter and Kayhi shop teacher Steve Thomas.

Marggie Sweetman, a physical therapist at Kayhi, said that the child’s feet didn’t reach the floor — as ideally they should for good posture — when she was sitting at the same level as her peers.

Finding specialized equipment for the classroom can be a difficult task, and Sweetman was unable to find a quick solution for the child, who she said she could not identify.

Ketchikan starts new chapter with $12M library

KETCHIKAN — Judith McQuerry was the first person through the doors of the just-opened Ketchikan Public Library on Wednesday.

McQuerry, who was library director from 1990 to November 2011, said she’s thrilled with the results of the $12-million project.

“I’m ecstatic that the bottom (book) stack is not full — that there’s some expansion space there,” she said. “That was really part of the goal, to have enough space, and I think we have enough space. We don’t have a ton of space, but we have enough space.”

Students attend floating fish school

KETCHIKAN — When the Jack Cotant rumbled out of the harbor shortly after 7 a.m. on Oct. 23, it was the first time maritime students at Kayhi had fished commercially in 15 years — as long a time as some of the students were old.

The 45-foot vessel was carrying students in the Ketchikan High School Maritime II class south of town to lay longline.

The maritime course itself is older than the Cotant. The class was started by Carroll Fader, an administrator at Kayhi in 1967. Jack Cotant was its first instructor.

Lone vet likes small-town feel of Ketchikan clinic

KETCHIKAN — Monica Mangis was a student in the spring of 2010 and performing surgery that fall.

The Ketchikan Veterinary Clinic’s only veterinarian said being in small community is a great opportunity for her.

“Most starting vets only get to do the basic — vaccinations, spays and neuters,” said Mangis, a 2010 graduate of Washington State University. “Up here we’re everything to everybody. You get to do a lot of surgeries; you get to see a lot of specialty cases.”

Ketchikan seeks float house removals

KETCHIKAN — Two migrating houses are causing trouble for the Ketchikan Gateway Borough.

The float houses — known as “Loggerville,” the floating village previously moored at Ward Cove and owned by Robert Holston — were moved from the cove to the tidelands at the airport reserve on Gravina Island, across the channel from Peninsula Point.

The houses are now moored at pilings south of the former Seley sawmill and are grounding, drying and refloating with the tides, which the borough argues is causing serious damage to the structures.
