NEW YORK — The two kids from Northern California burst from NFL afterthought to championship contender in eerily similar fashion a decade apart.

Tom Brady and Colin Kaepernick, each playing in a conference title game this weekend, are bookends to a fortuitous moment in quarterback history. On one side are the likes of Brady, Peyton Manning and Drew Brees, still scintillating in their mid-30s.

More NFL players testing positive for amphetamines 

NEW YORK — More NFL players are testing positive for amphetamines, a class of substances that includes the ADHD drug Adderall.

Since the start of last season, more than 10 players suspended for failing drug tests have publicly blamed it on taking the stimulant. And while the league doesn’t identify the substance when a player is penalized, senior vice president Adolpho Birch acknowledges that the number of positives for amphetamines has increased.

New York City Marathon planning moves forward after Sandy 

NEW YORK — The 26 miles might be the easy part.

The biggest challenge for this New York City Marathon on Sunday could be getting to the start, not the finish. The mayor of storm-battered New York says the race is still on, but flying in runners from out of town will be tricky, and there may not be a subway to get everyone to the starting line.

Superstorm Sandy shut down transportation, closed airports, flooded streets and left scores of neighborhoods without power — formidable obstacles for the organizers.

NYC Marathon not expected to be affected by storm 

NEW YORK — New York City Marathon organizers expect Hurricane Sandy to have little effect on Sunday’s race.

“We’re extraordinarily lucky the marathon is not today,” New York Road Runners President Mary Wittenberg said during a conference call Monday as wind and rain started to batter the city.

Instead, she said, “we have time on our side” — enough to prepare the course and for runners to travel to the city after the superstorm passes through.

NFL upholds Seahawks' disputed win over Packers 

NEW YORK — The NFL put its stamp of approval on the still-smoldering outcome of the Green Bay-Seattle game:

Wrong call.

Right review.

Wrong team still wins.

Seahawks 14, Packers 12.

With frustration mounting among coaches, players and fans, the worst fear finally materialized: a mistake by a replacement official would decide the outcome of a game.

It came while the NFL and its regular officials, locked out since June, were in resumed talks in an attempt to resolve the impasse.

That was still a day late for the Packers.
