ANCHORAGE — Joan Naviyuk Kane feels the pull of an ancestral place where she’s never been, a crumbling ghost village built on stilts across the rocky face of a remote western Alaska island.

The Anchorage poet believes seeing King Island up close would enrich her art with a sense of place and her Inupiat Eskimo roots — and she’s hoping to fund a visit for herself and other descendants through crowdsourcing.

“It is our land,” she said. “It is our identity.”

ANCHORAGE — Another volcano in Alaska is heating up, with seismic instruments signaling a possible eruption, scientists said Monday.

Tremors were detected at Pavlof Volcano, 625 miles southwest of Anchorage, according to the Alaska Volcano Observatory. Satellite imagery showed the mountain was “very, very hot,” said John Power, the U.S. Geological Survey scientist in charge at the observatory.

The aviation alert level for Pavlof was raised from “yellow” to “orange.” A major ash emission could threaten international flights.

ANCHORAGE — An ongoing investigation of trafficking in the North Slope Borough has led to the seizure of multiple shipments of alcohol and illegal drugs, police said Monday.

The six separate cases are expected to be forwarded to prosecutors. Authorities said such seizures are just a small take of a problem that affects a region affected by rampant substance abuse, so it’s crucial to get the word out that law enforcement officers are watching.

“It deters the conduct,” said Brian Sullivan, an assistant district attorney based in Anchorage.

ANCHORAGE — Even before he was charged in the slaying of a young barista, Israel Keyes bluntly told authorities in Alaska he would talk about other victims, but only on his terms.

Among the demands issued by the confessed serial killer: He wanted an execution date, not to languish in a maximum security federal prison. During an April 6, 2012, interview, Keyes made his wish known after federal prosecutor Kevin Feldis asked him to specify what his demands were.

“Tell me what you want,” the prosecutor said. “I don’t know what you want.”
