Facts about the oil tax giveaway

Just days after his $1 billion-plus oil revenue rollback passed, the Governor, oil companies and their allies began to crank up their PR machine. They’re spinning their bill, SB 21, as the reason for development that, um, started years ago under ACES, the law SB 21 just replaced. Soon they’ll be touting SB 21 as the reason for other “new” things, like radio and space travel.

Here’s some reality about these projects.

My Turn: Is Alaska letting cruise industry waste dumping damage the greatest fisheries in the world?

Care much about the decline of Alaska’s king salmon and halibut? I do. You do, and protecting Alaska’s fish and clean water is why you voted in 2006 for strict water quality standards to prevent cruise ship companies from dumping poorly treated, damaging copper and by products from human waste — 20,000 gallons of inadequately treated discharge at a time — into our fishing waters. Unfortunately the Governor and GOP-led House passed a bill last week to weaken this voter initiative.

The Governor's oil tax cut plan will damage Alaska's economy

Last year the Governor pushed a $2 billion oil revenue giveaway in the form of tax breaks that didn’t require new Alaska investment. There’s a smarter way to do oil reform, rewarding work leading to new production to earn reasonable tax breaks.

At the end of a political season, people still focus too much on their differences — which get exaggerated during the hype of campaign season. Well, let’s step back together for a moment — in the spirit of the Holiday season, in the spirit we all share as Alaskans, and in the spirit of extending a hand to children who, for no fault of their own, need our help.

Matching-up foster kids in need with laptops

This month we are launching our second annual “Laptops for Foster Youth Drive.” Since last year we have matched roughly 70 youth with good, late model used and new laptops. Youth have used these laptops for school, to transport pictures of their families and friends, and to lead a life that more closely resembles those of their peers outside of foster care. We are looking for laptops in good working order, that connect to the internet, and that have a word processing program. If you have one, please call us at 269-0106.

When debating proposals that could cost Alaskans billions of dollars, it’s important to have your facts straight. Recently a lobbying group took liberties with the facts to sway you into giving away Alaska’s fair return on the oil we own. People are entitled to their opinions. But they are not entitled to make up their own facts.
