Kenny's grand re-opening marks return of original ownership

Kenny’s Wok and Teriyaki celebrated its grand re-opening last week with a new menu and new interior décor.

Customers have dined at Kenny’s downtown eatery for seven years now, so the grand opening is more of a reopening. However, the celebration also marks the return of Kenny’s original owner, and namesake, Kwang “Kenny” Yoon.

Yoon once again runs Kenny’s with his head chef and general manager, Bruce Kim. So Kenny’s is opening under new — sort of — ownership.

Native culture topic of last lecture in SHI lecture series

“Our Tlingit tradition is an oral tradition, said state Sen. Albert Kookesh as he introduced Sealaska Board Vice Chair and President of Sealaska Heritage Institute Rosita Worl — the final speaker in the Native American Heritage Month lecture series.

“And she is very, very versed in that area,” Kookesh said.

Kookesh said Worl has peformed academic work at Harvard should be commended. He called her a great orator and a great leader.

Competition for pet owners' pocketbooks set to begin at Nugget Mall

It may turn out to be survival of the fittest at the Nugget Mall as two pet stores prepare to compete.

Petco plans to open its doors on Jan. 2. The pet store has more than 1,000 locations. TPG Capital and Leonard Green & Partners purchased Petco in 2006 for $1.8 billion.

However, there is already a pet store located at the Nugget Mall.

Wee Fishie Shoppe is a pet supply store located at 9342 Glacier Highway in a freestanding building in the Nugget Mall Shopping Center. It is a mall tenant.

PETCO hiring

The Nugget Mall’s new pet supply store plans to open Jan. 2.

“Petco will then hold a grand opening on the weekend of Jan. 6th through 8th.” said Bud Jaeger, Nugget Mall on-site property manager. A ribbon cutting ceremony is planned for the morning of Jan. 7, 2012.

Customers can adopt a pet, sign up for giveaways or model their pet for photos during grand opening weekend, said Petco spokeswoman Allie Maltese. Petco will have more information on its pet adoption later, she said.

It's beginning to look a lot like shopping season

The day after Thanksgiving in Juneau and across the nation shoppers could be thankful for discounts, and retailers can be thankful for shoppers. Friday had the trappings of a successful start to the holiday shopping season.

“Things went well this morning,” said Jack Lewis, Sales Associate at Southeast Furniture Warehouse.

The Warehouse “sold lots of gotta gobble it up, gotta go stuff,” Lewis said referring to the furniture store’s Gobble Up This Deal sale. Southeast Furniture did not start its sale until 10 a.m., Lewis said.

JEDC group makes progress on top 10 initiatives

Champions of Juneau Economic Development Council’s 10 action initiatives for its ocean products working group reported progress and opportunities at a recent teleconference.

The Development Council was contracted by the U.S. Department of Agriculture Forest Service to complete an economic development asset map and a strategic plan for southeast Alaska. “The map and plan would focus on actions to strengthen select industry sectors in the region, such as fishing, tourism and timber,” according to JEDC.

Will frugality go out the window on Black Friday?

Merchants are hoping shoppers make merry this holiday season — starting with the biggest shopping day of the year, Friday.

Southeast Furniture Warehouse, Inc., located in Lemon Creek, plans to hold a “Gobble up this deal” event on Friday. Warehouse sales associate Jack Lewis said the store plans to hang orange tags designating special Gobble Up deals, and store president Chris Jensen will “take his marker all around the warehouse marking down prices,” Lewis said.

Lewis said he anticipated a good holiday shopping season at the Warehouse.

Planning Commission hears awnings, apartments, gravel

The Red Dog Saloon asked the Planning Commission for an exception to a rule for canopy construction downtown. The bar, restaurant and retail store sought leeway to extend the canopy 18 inches further over the sidewalk and make it two feet taller than the current Juneau ordinance allows. The canopy is designed to fit with a new facade that features larger windows.

City staff found that the canopy is not in compliance. The Commission approved the variance.

Sealaska president urges unity in development of Southeast resources

Sealaska Corp. President and CEO Chris McNeil told a full house in Sealaska’s fourth floor conference room that Native corporations, tribes and villages must work together to manage the use of the region’s natural resources over the long term.

McNeil spoke on the legal status of Alaska Native corporations and economic self-determination during the latest in Sealaska Heritage Institute’s noon lecture series, presented to celebrate Native American Heritage Month. The brown-bag lunch series focuses on the impact of the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act.
