While Alaska’s newest ferries may not come with a full roof for their car decks, their Wi-Fi-sporting passengers may find the vessels have excellent online coverage.

The Juneau School District Board of Education passed a resolution Tuesday to support the provision of high-speed wireless Internet on Alaska Marine Highway System ferries.

JSD Superintendent Glenn Gelbrich said wireless online access while underway could make Alaska’s ferries an extension of the district’s more and more digitized classrooms.

The Juneau School District Budget Committee Tuesday asked the district to use transportation funds to hire two nurses and partially reinstate school drug testing programs for 2013-14.

After weeks of meetings the Juneau School District Budget Committee has made its recommendations to the school board for changes that can be made to the district administration’s draft budget.

Budget Committee Co-Chair Brian Holst helped create the committee’s report.

He said the committee process was “unwieldy in certain ways having so many people involved.”

Applications for two liquor licenses pending before the state’s Department of Commerce, Community and Economic Development came before the City and Borough of Juneau Assembly Monday night. A license for Tripp’s Viking Liquor, owned by Jack Tripp and located on South Franklin Street, received Assembly approval of a license renewal. Haydar Suyun, owner of the Sprazzo restaurant on North Franklin Street, did not, and the city may send the state a protest.

AT&T customers with LTE-enabled smartphones may have noticed a new icon for their 4G service — 4G LTE.

The telecom is switching its Juneau broadband service to Long Term Evolution at some as yet unknown date. However, AT&T spokesperson Andy Colley said tests would continue until rollout.

"AT&T has not officially launched 4G LTE in Juneau," Colley said. "We've been actively testing 4G LTE in Juneau for several days, and customers with 4G LTE-capable devices may have seen areas where 4G LTE was live on their phone."
