Voters could see an initiative on the October ballot asking if they’d like the city’s mill rate to be capped at 11.5 mills per dollar of assessed value instead of 12.

Assembly Member Randy Wanamaker has announced a proposal that would have the city attorney draft an ordinance to do so. The Assembly will consider the question — whether to send the measure to the voters — at Wednesday’s Finance Committee meeting. It meets at 5:30 p.m. in Assembly Chambers.

Wanamaker said he’s got several reasons for proposing the idea to the voters.

The City and Borough of Juneau Assembly will look on Monday at setting the cap for what it will fund the Juneau School District — which will be about $2 million less than previously projected.

The city’s agenda said that due to changes made on April 15 in the Legislature, the maximum the city may fund has been reduced. The amount the district will receive from the state, however, was increased to offset the change.

Mayor Bruce Botelho for the first time ever on Wednesday was prepared to ask the Assembly to censure a fellow assemblymember — Assemblywoman Ruth Danner — over lack of an apology for remarks made about the law department “misleading” the Planning Commission.

The issue arose following the April 10 meeting of the Planning Commission, when it approved a gravel crushing operationñ in a D3 zone.
