The avalanche mitigation study commissioned by the City and Borough of Juneau and presented to the City and Borough of Juneau Assembly on Monday makes eight recommendations. They are:

• An evacuation concept should be developed, perhaps at two levels — evacuation and closure of the severe hazard zone; evacuation and closure of severe and special engineering zones with closure of Egan Drive and Glacier Highway.

Juneau’s kindergarten readiness scores in reading are booming. So much so the city is now above the state average, instead of lagging behind as it has for many years.

The Alaska Department of Education & Early Development implemented the Alaska Developmental Profile three years ago, requiring all kindergartners or students entering public school for the first time in first grade to be tested.

Sen. Lisa Murkowski shared a message of life-long learning and legislative support with students at Gastineau Elementary School on Thursday.

Murkowski visited with two classrooms and a school-wide assembly Thursday afternoon, at the end of which she shared two special gifts: a book for the library — Alaska author Shelley Gill’s “Swimmer” and a mostly new American flag, which was flown over the U.S. Capitol and came with a special certificate.

Her first stop was Rene Walker’s first-grade class and they asked questions of her.

A joint resolution was submitted in the Alaska House of Representatives today to have Gov. Sean Parnell direct the Department of Education & Early Development to pursue a waiver for the No Child Left Behind act.

The department has been looking at options since Secretary of Education Arne Duncan announced a possibility of waivers last September, releasing details later in the month.
