The Juneau School District Board of Education will decide today whether or not students will have spring break next year.

Particularly gusty wind conditions Friday morning canceled four Alaska Airline trips from, or stopping in Juneau, with at least one flight delayed by weather.

Winds gusts were so high around Juneau on Friday that Eaglecrest Ski Area set a new record. Patricia deLaBruere deputy airport manager, said the Juneau Area Wind System clocked winds at Eaglecrest at 116 knots — 133.49 miles per hour. That data goes to the National Center for Atmospheric Research in Colorado, deLaBruere said, and has "logged that as a new record wind peak for that wind sensor at Eaglecrest."

The Juneau School District Budget Committee heavily favored retaining nurses, para educators and many also focused on greater community interaction when the panel gave its opinion on the proposed budget cuts Tuesday night.

Proposed budget cuts include cutting six of 10 full-time nurses, replacing those nurses with “health assistants,” cutting para educator hours, increased Pupil-to-Teacher-Ratio, administration cuts, custodial and maintenance cuts and many others to meet a $3 million to nearly $6 million deficit.

The city’s deputy city manager — Kim Kiefer — will be promoted to the top position once current City Manager Rod Swope retires March 31.

The City and Borough of Juneau Assembly finalized its hiring process Monday night. It met in executive session for 5 1/2 hours on Saturday to interview the candidates and discuss related hiring packages. On Monday, it met in executive session for 25 minutes before reopening the meeting to vote on the selection of Kiefer. Her appointment had one no vote, cast by Assembly Member Randy Wanamaker.
