Young prepares to run for 21st term with little apparent opposition

ANCHORAGE — Alaska Republican Congressman Don Young is preparing to run for his 21st two-year term and the Democrats still don’t have a recognizable challenger out raising campaign cash as the year ends.

The only Democrats who have filed to take on Young are Doug Urquidi, who picked up 11 percent of the vote in a bid for an Anchorage Assembly seat last spring, and Frank Vondersaar, who runs for office every election and says his platform involves counteracting the “hard-core fascist prostitute Justice majority US Supreme Court.”

Alaska Rep. Don Young, college professor continue to trade jabs

ANCHORAGE — The feud between Alaska Congressman Don Young and prominent historian Douglas Brinkley that started at a House committee hearing last Friday has continued, with Brinkley calling Young a bully and a “low-grade Joseph McCarthy.”

Young, for his part, maintains that Brinkley is just a publicity hound who is trying to boost sales for his books.

Alaska congressman wants to repeal all federal regulations since 1991

Anchorage to host meeting of Energy Council; group's February meeting a big draw for lawmakers

ANCHORAGE — The Energy Council, a group whose Washington, D.C., gatherings shut down Alaska’s legislative sessions every February because so many lawmakers attend, is bringing its show to Anchorage for three days this week.

The council is holding a meeting at the Hotel Captain Cook. It’s expected to include legislators from energy-producing states coming to talk about oil and gas and to see Alaska.

Navy gives itself clearance to sink 2 ships a year in the Gulf of Alaska for training

ANCHORAGE — The Navy has obtained authority to blast and sink as many as two real ships a year in the Gulf of Alaska over the next five years to give pilots and gunners authentic targets for their sights.

But ocean campaigners say that even decommissioned, stripped-out ships, like the ones the Navy will use as targets, contain residual hazardous materials that can poison the Gulf’s rich habitat for years. They’re trying to stop the target practice before it begins.
